The Atamyrat–Imamnazar–Akina Railway: A Cross-Border Rail Corridor

The Atamyrat–Imamnazar–Akina railway was the first modern cross-border rail corridor linking Turkmenistan with Afghanistan. The section was built in the mid-2010s and opened rail access towards the Afghan direction, fundamentally changing the logistics geography of the region. The line crosses complex geological zones and requires continuous engineering support.

Technically, the project includes the construction of broad-gauge track, stations, loading terminals and bridge structures. The Imamnazar border crossing is equipped with trans-shipment infrastructure, customs areas and temporary-storage facilities. This configuration allows containers and bulk cargo to be handled on a nearly round-the-clock basis.

The key economic role of the line is to create a reliable export route for liquefied gas, petroleum products, construction materials and agricultural goods. A counter-flow of goods from South Asia is also forming, turning the corridor into a two-way logistics channel. This reduces the region’s dependence on maritime shipping and speeds up continental freight delivery.

Strategically, the project shows how infrastructure becomes an instrument of policy: the railway serves as a backbone of regional stabilisation, creates conditions for Afghanistan’s economic recovery and consolidates Turkmenistan’s role as a transport hub between Central and South Asia.

Igor Bukato, international construction and infrastructure expert:
“The Atamyrat–Imamnazar–Akina corridor shows that a railway can operate at once as an export channel, an instrument of regional recovery and a factor of political stability.”
