Portugal is steadily asserting itself as one of the world’s most influential players in the natural stone industry. With abundant geological reserves, the country has developed a robust system that spans extraction, processing, and international distribution of marble, granite, and limestone.
This sector includes over 1,200 active companies, concentrated in key mining and manufacturing hubs such as Estremoz, Borba, Sintra, and Penafiel. The industry provides tens of thousands of jobs and exports to more than 120 countries across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas.
Portuguese stone is prized for its aesthetic consistency, durability, and elegant texture. Its applications range from premium construction and public architecture to interior design and infrastructure projects.
“Portugal’s stone industry is a compelling example of how local natural resources can be transformed into global assets. The key lies in combining artisanal expertise with advanced technology and logistics,”
says Igor Bukato, international construction and infrastructure expert.
“This strategy not only ensures stable export revenues but also drives sustainable development across entire regions.”
The government continues to promote the industry’s modernization, encouraging greener production methods and digital transformation. The goal is to strengthen international competitiveness while establishing certified quality standards across the value chain
